      You’re rather confused.

      The oil spill was an accident. The pollution in the Arctic was intentional.

      Moreover, isn’t it rather twisted to suggest that two wrongs somehow make a right? Is Hiter’s invasion of Russia just fine because Russia has also invaded countries?

          Well, to be fair, I would suggest that the Russian destruction of the environment in places like Archangel and the rest of the Kola peninsular was more a result of lazy stupidity and incompetence, plus a good dose of corruption.

      The timing is perfect. It deflects attention from the oil spill in USA. Just as the flood of articles about “Russian racist hate for illegal immigrants” was timed to deflect attention from the racist law in Arizona.

    The state of the polar bears in Moscow zoo is a travesty, especially during the Summer months. If Putin cares so much about polar bears he should have them removed from Moscow zoo and repatriated to Antarctica. But he doesn’t care, its just a cheap publicity stunt, Caucescau-style, and remember how he ended up.

      Chernobyl was no accident as the Rooshan Ministries of Power were in charge, and decided to remove the safeties. Also then did not give warning to the population until it was detected in Europe thus compounding the genocide.

    Is this also “an accident”?

    Of course, the US side explains that Americans want to continue to enjoy a much more prosperous, luxurious and decadent life than Russia and the rest of the World. And in order to do that, the rest of the World should allow Americans to endanger the Earth.

    And if Putin doesn’t understand that Americans are entitled to take advantage of the rest of the World, then he is a goon and the World’s worst polluter.

        I doubt if USA “makes” 25% of the world economic output. It seems that these days, all real-life products are made in China. What is true though is that the United States consumes about 25 % of the world economic output.

        Americans own 25% of World’s wealth and feel that their wealth entitles them to pollute the World.

        Your argument amounts to saying that rich people have the right pollute the World and make it uninhabitable for poor people.

          And if you look at the ratio of pollution to economic output, well Russia once again looks pretty bad, it’s industry is not only terribly inefficient, it is terribly polluting as well.

          That’s exactly what I am saying: we produce and consume more than anybody else, and we pollute the environment for those who are poor and produce/consume little.

        ‘Global Warming’ ,
        if true at all, is caused by the mysterious/uncontrolable cycles of the planet called, the Sun, and other natural weather patterns, completely out of human control. There simply is NO ‘human caused global warming’, that is a lie, false-science. But, world-wide massive pollution/poisoning of the oceans/rivers. the atmosphere, the earth, yes, much of that IS human caused, by ALL nations, everywhere. And, America is a leader in trying to clean this up, both in America and to help other nations to clean up their own mess, and we have been busy with that work, for many many years.
        What has the Russian Federation been doing?
        From reports we receive from there, nothing, but adding more pollution, as is China also.

            But just as the speed and scale of China’s rise as an economic power have no clear parallel in history, so its pollution problem has shattered all precedents. Environmental degradation is now so severe, with such stark domestic and international repercussions, that pollution poses not only a major long-term burden on the Chinese public but also an acute political challenge to the ruling Communist Party. And it is not clear that China can rein in its own economic juggernaut.

            Public health is reeling. Pollution has made cancer China’s leading cause of death, the Ministry of Health says. Ambient air pollution alone is blamed for hundreds of thousands of deaths each year. Nearly 500 million people lack access to safe drinking water.

            Chinese cities often seem wrapped in a toxic gray shroud. Only 1 percent of the country’s 560 million city dwellers breathe air considered safe by the European Union. Beijing is frantically searching for a magic formula, a meteorological deus ex machina, to clear its skies for the 2008 Olympics.

            Environmental woes that might be considered catastrophic in some countries can seem commonplace in China: industrial cities where people rarely see the sun; children killed or sickened by lead poisoning or other types of local pollution; a coastline so swamped by algal red tides that large sections of the ocean no longer sustain marine life.

            China is choking on its own success. The economy is on a historic run, posting a succession of double-digit growth rates. But the growth derives, now more than at any time in the recent past, from a staggering expansion of heavy industry and urbanization that requires colossal inputs of energy, almost all from coal, the most readily available, and dirtiest, source.

            “It is a very awkward situation for the country because our greatest achievement is also our biggest burden,” says Wang Jinnan, one of China’s leading environmental researchers. “There is pressure for change, but many people refuse to accept that we need a new approach so soon.”

            China’s problem has become the world’s problem. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides spewed by China’s coal-fired power plants fall as acid rain on Seoul, South Korea, and Tokyo. Much of the particulate pollution over Los Angeles originates in China, according to the Journal of Geophysical Research.

            More pressing still, China has entered the most robust stage of its industrial revolution, even as much of the outside world has become preoccupied with global warming.

            Experts once thought China might overtake the United States as the world’s leading producer of greenhouse gases by 2010, possibly later. Now, the International Energy Agency has said China could become the emissions leader by the end of this year, and the Netherlands Environment Assessment Agency said China had already passed that level.

            For the Communist Party, the political calculus is daunting. Reining in economic growth to alleviate pollution may seem logical, but the country’s authoritarian system is addicted to fast growth. Delivering prosperity placates the public, provides spoils for well-connected officials and forestalls demands for political change. A major slowdown could incite social unrest, alienate business interests and threaten the party’s rule.

            But pollution poses its own threat. Officials blame fetid air and water for thousands of episodes of social unrest. Health care costs have climbed sharply. Severe water shortages could turn more farmland into desert. And the unconstrained expansion of energy-intensive industries creates greater dependence on imported oil and dirty coal, meaning that environmental problems get harder and more expensive to address the longer they are unresolved.

    The Arctic, suffers from countless barrels of oil remaining from the Soviet era.

    Alexandra Land is home to thousands of barrels of fuel and lubricants. They were brought there in the 1960s for Soviet military bases, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union, they were no longer needed, and were just left there, the leaking fuel and rusty metal pose a serious environmental threat,

    At least five endangered species live in the archipelago. And if nothing is done today, ecologists warn, there will be no tomorrow for them.

    “When the spring arrives, poisoned rivers will flow into the Barents Sea and then to the ocean… oil patches will cover the water,” said Vyacheslav Rozhnov, a biological scientist and deputy director of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution. “And these flows will kill everything along their path. Among them are beluga whales, walruses and polar bears.”
    The scientists don’t have the authority to take the barrels away. But they’ve brought the issue to the attention of those that do.

    Putin has said Russia is responsible for the Soviet legacy in the Arctic region, and will do its best not to allow this cemetery of barrels to become a graveyard for wildlife.

    Experts say words are easy, but action will be a lot harder.

    “We only have four months a year when ships can reach this land and can go through the ice,” said Roman Ershov from the Franz Josef Land Reserve. “A weak infrastructure will also be a serious obstacle. I think it’ll take up to 10 years or even more.

    It’s taken Russia the successors to the Soviet Union 40+ years to finally own up to the environmental disaster THEY have caused in the Arctic and now it will take at least 10 + more to halt the disaster and it will take nature centuries to self heal.
