Why can’t all countries, who have their citizens involved in various international sports competitions ,and waving their national flags, including these olympic games, remember: these sporting events, are just that, SPORTING competitions, to see which athletes are, ‘the best’, not which nations are the best, or the worst, etc.
In this ridiculous political game, Putin’s Russian Federation, is not alone in this sports-nationalism nonsence, but….. such unsportmanship as was just shown in Vancouver, by Pluschenko, does not give glory to his country, but quite the contrary.
It’s not even to find out who is the best. People forget that the Olympics is merely a form of entertainment, and as such is just a vehicle for broadcasting commercials so that the NBC and others would make a fat profit. It’s all about money and nothing else.
All these flags, anthems and other types of jingoism are really sickening. You are right Daniel, Russia is not alone in that. The Dutch were so engrossed in a speed skating controversy, they forgot that at the same time their government fell over the Afghanistan controversy. I think our own U.S. athletes are also guilty of wrapping themselves in the flag, and so are Canadians and others.
But still, I don’t know any country where the government whips up all that ultra patriotism quite as much as the Russian government does. It’s just absurd.
There is more sarcasm in this cartoon than immediately obvious! “Go ahead, Russia” (which is more precise translation of the sign) is the title of Medvedev’s article from last September. That article was a hilarious mix of meaningless talking points and naive day-dreaming.
This sign hints that cheering for Russian athletes is as delusional as Medvedev’s cheering for Russia’s future
What one has to remember about Russia and Russians is that to them everything – and I do mean everything- is a competition. Rarely do they do anything ‘just for fun’.
This goes beyond sport for Russians, impacting every aspect of their lives. Even while in school, they race to see who can finish their tests first.
Sportsmanship does not take a back seat when Russians compete, it’s not even in the same car. The objective is to WIN at any cost and by any means necessary.
Of course Russia is not the only country to act in this manner, but they are certainly the most blatant about it.
[What one has to remember about Russia and Russians is that to them everything – and I do mean everything- is a competition. Rarely do they do anything ‘just for fun’.]
Where did you get that idiotic idea? It’s quite the opposite. What separates Russians from Western Europeans and Americans is their laid back attitude. Westerners are the most ambitious and competitive people on Earth. Russians aren’t. Just compare the Olympic coverage: American NBC TV coverage was much more nationalistic than Russia’s coverage.
[Russia is not the only country to act in this manner, but they are certainly the most blatant about it.]
How do you know? You didn’t watch the Olympics on the Russian TV, did you? All your information about Russia’s reaction to the Olympics comes from the American/UK media, which are so nationalistic and bigoted that they simply expect that Russia should have the same attitude as they.
It is the US, Canadian and UK media that are still fighting the Cold War in sports. The Russian mass media is much less bigoted on average.
How do you know that the Russian mass media is much less bigoted? If you are an American living in America as you profess to be, where do you watch their media?
So that would explain why within 15 minute of the official start of the August war the Russian media was making false accusations of genocide against the Georgian people, and publishing all sorts of ridiculous and baseless stories, none of which had any basis in fact, and were described by the IFFC report as racist incitement to violence against the ethnic Georgian population of South Ossetia.
Really Arthur, you are ridiculous.
Really
Being busy today, I just happened to mindlessly click on my television this evening, as I continued with other matters, when I heard an unpleasant though familiar melody being sung, in Russian, by a large choir, supported by an orchestra, then as I turned to face the TV screen, I saw the raising of the ugly Russian (Federation) flag, and some ugly uniformed people marching through an entrance tunnel, towards the flag pole and the center arena ….and then it hit me: Ah! and this is the official ending ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics, and the raising of the flag ceremony of the next city to host it, Sochi, Russia!
At the remembrance of that city, Sochi, I let out my, YUCK!, and quickly clicked off the TV.
And the singing of that wretched anthem, by itself, conjured up in my memory, all those dark long years of communist repression and murder, and of the crap that Putin and gang are still doing over there . That melody, is the same old sour commie tune. And, are the words, new words? -I doubt it. That scene and that anthem, gave me indigestion!
Down with Sochi! May it be cancelled and never happen!
Putin’s Russia, is not a fit place for any international Olympics. Let’s wait for a future free Russia, where there can be, just, athletic sportsmanship, and not some political-propaganda extravaganza, to prop up a falling gangster regime.
And too, how can anyone who goes to Sochi, be physically safe there?
[I saw some ugly uniformed people marching through an entrance tunnel, towards the flag pole and the center arena ….and then it hit me: Ah! and this is the official ending ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics]
The only “uniformed” people at the closing ceremonies were the Canadian Mounted Police:
Why do you find them ugly?
To Comrade ‘Arthur’ (or is it really, Ivan Ivanovich?):
So present Russia is so wonderful? Come on, comrade, who are you fooling, especially on this site?
At least you are consistent. Every time I see your ‘name’ at the top, I know I am about to read horse manure.
Did you ever tell the truth about anything, in your whole life?
I doubt it.
But, thanks for the laughs.
We will all laugh, when Sochi is cancelled.
Sincere thanks for the hearty laugh your comment raised on that moron.
Sadly it will have no effect on Artie, as his skin is thicker than a rhinoceros’s. And to boot HE thinks he’s quite smart, what a laugh.
