Psycho Russia, Qu’est-ce que c’est?
We simply don’t see how it’s possible to argue that neo-Soviet Russia is governed by anyone except a clan of barbarically ignorant madmen. Given this reality, it’s impossible to imagine how Russia as we know it can survive.
Just last week, we reported how even the Kremlin is, dimly at least, aware of generally being on the verge of total economic collapse, and specifically of seeing its crucial energy sector implode like a house of cards for lack of investment. Even the Kremlin seemed cognizant of the fact that it needed foreign investment, particularly American oil and gas expertise, if it wanted its ship of state to stay afloat.
And yet, what was the big news coming out of Russia last week? Paranoid, rabid anti-Americanism including an attempt to base strategic bombers in Venezuela and/or Cuba and even more nationalist crackdowns on investors, that’s what. In other words, Russian policy was proceeding in the exact opposite direction from Russian interests. It was almost as if Russia were being governed by a foreign spy bent on the nation’s ultimate destruction.
65% of all Russians, it was reported, see the U.S. as an evil nation, and half believe Russia faces a direct military theat from NATO. Make no mistake: this is not ignorance on the part of the population, is it policy imposed from the Kremlin, and it is used to justify actions like the recent seizure of assets from the Norwegian telecom firm Telenor by the Kremlin-controlled Alfa Group in a shamelessly corrupt manipulation of the Russian court system the likes of which only the Kremlin could orchestrate.
To all appearances, just at the very moment when it can least afford to do so, just as it has been shown beyond cavil that its economy depends utterly on the West, Russia has decided to wall itself off from the outside world in a childish tantrum of greed, paranoia and blind hatred. This is exactly what happened after the Bolshevik revolution, and the ultimate result cannot be expect to be one bit different: Russia will destroy itself, all the while issuing crazy denunciations of the evil foreigners who it imagines are obsessed with possessing the magnificance of the Holy Rus.
Vladimir Putin’s Russia is rapidly sliding into an abyss from which there is no escape. If the people of Russia care anything for their children’s future, they will take a look at their recent history and then take decisive action to avert this apocalypse. They have precious little time remaining to make the attempt.
