In 1974 Solzhenitsyn published an article called “To live without lying”. It was one of two “last straws” (along with Gulag Archipelago) that caused his exile.
In 2008 Yulia Latynina describes that the main principle of contemporary Russia is LIE. It’s better than Stalin’s foundation – blood. Blood comes from Gulag, and lie comes from TV. You can turn off TV, but you can’t turn off Gulag.
But the lie is overwhelming – Goebbels-like. It’s the lie of TV, of Internet, of rumors that are spread not by people who don’t know – but by those who know perfectly well. The lie is easily accepted by the people.
But why? Why dumb brute lie is so quickly swallowed and easily digested? Latynina lists four rules of Goebbels lie.
Understanding these rules is crucial to understanding today’s Russia.
