Humiliation in Bulgaria
Last week little Bulgaria, whose citizens live far longer than “mighty” Russians on average, poked a finger right in Russia’s eye. It told the Russians it was no longer interested in hosting a pipeline to Europe, specifically Greece.
There were two truly devastating implications from this action.
First, Bulgaria announced it had repudiated the Russians because of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico at an oil well operated by British Petroleum. The Bulgarians announced to the world that they felt Russia’s scheme for the pipeline was no more reliable, and therefore could not be trusted. Once again, in other words, events in the U.S. prove to dominate events in Russia, just as the price of oil set by Americans controls the Russians stock market. And the Bulgarians made it clear that Russia is at least as incompetent in managing oil resources as the US, if not much more so. Ouch.
Second, Russian influence in the former Soviet sphere was once again exposed as pathetically weak. In fact, in two more editorials we publish today we show how Russian influence around the world, from Kyrgyzstan to South Korea, has been exposed as wretched and negative in every aspect. With every passing day, more and more countries are beginning to realize that they simply cannot do business with the neo-Soviet state of Vladimir Putin, run by a proud KGB spy. Every day, Putin reminds the people of post-Soviet space that his country is an abusive, manipulative, aggressive rogue state which fully intends to recreate the Soviet empire at the first opportunity.
This phenomenon was first fully on view with the Russian invasion of Georgia in 2008, when the entire planet rejected the annexation of Ossetia and Abkhazia and world leaders rushed to the aid of besieged Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili.
It was displayed most recently when then EU and the USA went forward to move beyond the UN sanctions against Iran which Russia successfully watered down to the point of insignificance. Russia fumed and sputtered without outrage, and was ignored. Well, not totally ignored. Some mocked the land of Putin as “schizophrenic” on Iran.
It is more clear now than ever that Russia stands utterly alone in the world, helplessly betrayed by the KGB lunatics who govern it, unable to sit at the table of civilized discourse and be treated as an equal by the major nations of the world.
In fact, even tiny, backwards Bulgaria sees Russia as beneath contempt.

Well, with Greece messed up, Bulgaria feels like it would have nobody to sell the product to. I would not rejoice much about that ‘Gulf of Mexico’ justification. Which has nothing to do with potential security but all to do with finding an opportunity.
South Korea was never in the Soviet sphere of influence. Besides I know of other projects Russians have there and they are just fine.

Leos point was absolutely correct. He`s not very optimistic about the importance of cancellation of this little pipeline, that`s all. Look at Greece now, who wants to invest in business with basically bankrupt state?
I hope they cancel the south stream, that would be something!
Note also that Russia will surely well compensate the moral and financial losses by dramatically increasing the gas prices for Bulgaria the next year (Bulgaria has no other major gas supplier). This will be a very understandable and fair step, taking into account that Bulgaria abandoned these joint projects AFTER signing all the mutual agreements. So, enjoy your winter holidays, bulgarian “bratushki”, and hopelessly wait when Nabucco will be built!
I think there must had been provisions in the contract that the Russians will now use against the Bulgarians.

By the way “Amigo”, if the Russians are stupid enough to either cut off the gas supply to Bulgaria, or try and raise the price, well you will only watch Europe diversify away even faster from Russian gas supplies…..
You can try to “diversify” but how?
Germany and old Europe will support Russia anyways, as they invested money in the current/future pipelines such as North Stream. The main hysteric voices for diversification come from new “Europeans” (or sub-Europeans, to be more direct) like Baltic countries, Poland, and Bulgaria/Romania/Hungary etc. Russia has a winning strategy — not to speak with the whole Europe but only with several strategic partner countries like Germany and France. They like it as well — “solidarity” is only good for sub-Europeans, while the old Europe wants to divide and conquer.

Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov is the main opposition not the whole of the country and yes, they do have energy supply vulnerability issues related to Russia and Putin certainly won’t let them off easy that’s for sure.
